Physiotherapists are healthcare professionals who work in many settings like hospitals and in private practice, often collaboratively alongside physicians and healthcare teams, such as chiropractors, occupational therapists and massage therapists. Using a patient-centred approach, physiotherapists use evidence-based knowledge to assess, treat, and manage pain, injuries, movement dysfunction, and chronic conditions. The goal of physiotherapy is to empower, promote independence and improve the quality of life patients, across all ages and abilities.

Physiotherapists will work with you to put together a treatment plan, for your condition or injury, so you can get back to enjoying life and the activities you love.

A physiotherapist appointment often consists of detailed history and specific physical tests and measures, such as flexibility or range of motion. Using the assessment, a diagnosis is established, and a treatment plan is created.

Physiotherapists are medical professionals and primary care practitioners, and this means that you have direct access to physiotherapy without a doctor’s referral.

Massage therapists usually apply pressure with their hands, but they can also use their forearms or elbows. There are at least 80 different types of massage. Some are gentle, and some are very active and intense. Be sure to let your therapist know of the pressure you prefer.

Chiropractors use manipulation, soft tissue therapies, exercise and various modalities (shockwave, laser, and ultrasound) to help patients get back to moving pain free.

Chiropractors use spinal manipulative therapy, also known as adjustments to help get the spine and other joints in the body moving pain free. This is done with specific movements to joints allowing joint motion correction, reducing pain and improving function.

The optimal time to see a chiropractor is immediately after an injury, or if you’re looking for injury prevention. A medical referral is never needed to visit a chiropractor, and often people visit chiropractors while also attending treatments from physiotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture and other practitioners.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine which uses very thin needles placed on specific points in the body. It is often used to relieve pain, reduce headaches, and reduce nausea during pregnancy or chemotherapy.

Harjit’s passion for sports and fitness led him to pursue a Kinesiology degree from UBC as well as his Master of Physiotherapy from Brunel University in London, England. He grew up in South Vancouver, working as a personal trainer at the Langara Family YMCA and was heavily involved with youth through sports programs and day camps at Sunset Community Centre for nearly 10 years. He also served as a basketball coach with his alma matter at John Oliver Secondary School.

Harjit’s experience in sports/weight training led to some unfortunate injuries, which grew a newfound interest in rehabilitation. Going through inadequate rehab himself, he wanted to ensure others didn’t receive the same insufficient treatment. With this in mind, he has a greater understanding of nagging injuries that can hinder regular activities of daily living. He believes in prioritizing the client’s goals by ensuring that they are provided with the knowledge to continue improving independently once their treatment is complete.

During his time off, he enjoys weight training, playing/watching sports and spending time with friends and family. Binging Netflix while snacking on any kind of chocolate is also a common occurrence that happens one too many times.
